Great protest banner outside Belfast City Hall on last night’s news. Smacks of Saatchi’s campaign slogan “Labour isn’t working” with none of the subtlety or wit.
Democracy isn’t working if we reject the legitimacy of decisions made by the majority vote of elected representatives. To suggest that an Ulster Protestant British cultural identity has been trampled on by a decision to fly the Union flag on days broadly in line with the rest of the United Kingdom (on state occasions) is absurd. The absurdity doesn’t mean that the emotions whipped up by sinister elements are irrelevant, only that reason should prevail. Maybe the banner should read Rationality isn’t working.
