In memoriam – 7/7

It’s 9 years since the London bombings and the shocking images of carnage and destruction. The war against hate continues.

Those who are misguided in their ideology, theology and morality are still a tiny minority of humanity. Those who acknowledge reason as the only logical determining factor in how we should live our lives, may call themselves philosophically astute.

If there is something supernatural that is worthy of faith, one would hope that tolerance and empathy for others would be high on the list of obligations adhered to by the faithful.

The appeal of strict discipline and simple explanations recruits zealots for all kinds of madness. Thinking for oneself and remaining open to argument is not for the faint-hearted.

Smugness puts people off atheistic pronouncements. Modesty is a quality that is rare in those who profess to know all the answers to life, the universe and everything.

Sacrificial slaughter might have had some rationale when less was known about the weather, but taking a life to advance some cause is just wrong. If I kill A to get B, then C is right to kill me to avenge A, and get D…and so it would go on. Tit-for-tat killings ad infinitum. Belfast is not the only place that has had its belly full of ‘dying for the cause’.

Our thoughts and prayers should be with the victims and their families…
