David Puttnam, the renowned film director, has been living in Skibbereen, West Cork for 26 years. He was appointed the Digital Champion for Ireland and has achieved great changes in the technology infrastructure. Rural communities can follow the example of Skibereen. They set up a community digital data hub in a former cinema in the town.
The objective was to hang on to the talented young people in their community by embracing the use of digital technology. They set up the Ludgate Hub to facilitate the creativity of those who work with digital technology and promote its use by local businesses and townspeople.
This could turn things around for country towns who previously would see their young people leave to find work. This initiative was screened on RTE recently
